Maine Vacation

August - September 2006

Lighthouse near Schoodic Harbor in Maine (North of Acadia National Park and Desert Island).

This was taken on Deer Island in Canada just a ferry ride away from Campobello Island.  Both are in New Brunswick, Canada.

This tiny computer shop builds and services computers and sets up networks in their tiny community in Maine.  We happened across this on a lonely road in mid-Maine.

This is the "Wyoming" (bow and stern).  It is the frame (partial) located in the Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine.  As more funds are made available, more of the frame will be completed.  The Wyoming is the largest wood boat made in the United States.

Route 1 in Maine.  Not sure where I took this but it was somewhere... :-)

There are a lot of Shaw's in the northeast.  We don't know any of them and we're not related but we still had to stop by and have lunch at Shaw's Wharf.

One of the stores we were told to visit was the Maine State Prison store.  The goods are made by the prisoners and at very low prices compared to other such products.  Well, we went there and looked around and kept coming back to the big ships (big).  After awhile, we started asking questions about this ship, the SS Mariner III.  The prisoner who made it only made one of these (documented on the information card at the front).

The prisoners are paid based upon their skills and this particular ship was not made from a model but from raw materials.

At the store there are four prisoners and two guards.  After buying the ship, we came back to the store and watched as the prisoners  packed it for shipping.  We haven't received it yet.  I'll replace this picture with the final upon its arrival.

On our first day in Acadia (Mt. Desert (pronounced dessert) Island, we rented bicycles and traveled 25 miles along the carriage paths.

Lisa and I atop Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park.  Cadillac Mt. is the highest point on Desert Island.

Help me, help me, I'm falling... Yeah, right... Near Schoodic Point.

Near St. Stephens, Canada.

Bar Harbor Lighthouse - Desert Island

This is one of many whirlpools between Deer and Moose Islands.  I took pictures of the "largest" whirlpool but this had a duck in it...

Whale blowing water upon return to surface.

Just right of the North Bridge in Cambridge, Massachusetts.   The North Bridge is where the "shot heard around the world" occurred that started the Revolutionary War.  It was the first time Patriots fired upon English soldiers.

House in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1667.

A section of Battle Road - the start of the Revolutionary War.  The British left Boston and traveled down this road towards Cambridge with the objective of seizing weapons and ammo.  The started in grand formation but by the end of the battle were bloodied (as were the Patriots).

GPS showing we crossed the 45th parallel.

This isn't the "real" North Bridge.  It was destroyed.  Three previous bridges were built but two were destroyed by hurricanes and one by another storm.  This was built in the 1850s.

Sunset on Campobello Island

Now here's a hot blond and her convertible...  :-)
