Santiago de Chile 2005

Santiago from its tallest hill.

We arrived in Santiago on Chile's equivalent of our 4th of July - independence day.  That's why the streets are so empty, in preparation for the parade.

This is inside the Hotel Plaza San Francisco, where I stayed.

Santiago has an absolutely fabulous subway system.  I was very impressed.

Here's the train... :-)

The Andes mountains go up to over 22,000 feet.  There were a couple of days that were absolutely clear but I didn't have my camera.  When I did, well, smog...

The National Archives in Santiago.

Now I'm not a New Yorker but this is probably as close as Santiago is likely to get to Times Square.

Not too far from the high rise buildings and the glitter of downtown is this.

The tallest building in Santiago is the cell phone company and the building is shaped like a cell phone.

Santiago is full of coffee houses; they're everywhere.

September is the start of spring in Chile and the mood was festive.

Going up the mountain was by incline (you can also drive or walk).  We took the tram to go down.

This is the tallest hill (maybe a mountain) in Santiago.  Of course, it is ringed by the Andes mountains.

This was the parade as it went past our hotel.

This is Jose Rodriquez.  He's from PA and came down for a week to help me out.
